Gokyo Trek

Kongmaru Trek Photographs
Gokyo Trek HighlightsHimalayan panoramas and high altitude turquoise lakes.  Mysterious and exotic, Nepal holds prime position in the imagination of every mountain lover and trekker in the world.

It is home to the bulk of the Himalayas and of course Mt. Everest, planet Earth’s highest peak. In fact, of the world’s 14 highest peaks, 8 are in Nepal. It is also the birthplace of Buddha and home of the famed porters and mountain climbing Sherpa. This mixture of mountains and ancient culture make Nepal a magical land of superlatives and an absolute delight for trekkers.

The Gokyo Trek is a less travelled alternative and, many say, more beautiful trek than the Everest Base Camp. The views of Everest are more expansive and the the Himalayan range more spectacular. From a ridge above Gokyo you have an amazing panoramic view that includes four peaks above 8000 metres. In addition there are the beautiful turquoise coloured Gokyo Lakes, the highest fresh water lakes in the world at over 4700 metres above sea level.

Accommodation is in local comfortable tea houses.

The itinerary at a glance

Day 1:
Arrive in Kathmandu. You will be received at the airport, taken to visit Pashupati Nath temple and then dropped at your Hotel.

The Hotel will be the Radisson or equivalent.

Overnight: Hotel, Kathmandu.

Day 2:
Early morning transfer to the domestic airport for our flight to Lukla. At Lukla we meet the rest of our team and trek to Phakding.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 3:
After breakfast we trek to Namche Bazaar. Initially the trail is a gentle incline. Towards the end we have a climb that gets us to Namche Bazaar.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 4:
Acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar. Namche is the capital of the Khumbu region and so the largest settlement we will cross.

We will spend the day in ‘slow motion’! We could either explore the bazaar, walk up to the ridge to get a look around or just sit back with a good book at hand.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 5:
Today we trek from Namche to Phortse Tenga. Initially, we have a bit of a climb to get out of Namche. Then the gradient eases up. Finally we descend to our destination at Phortse Tenga.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 6:
Phortse Tenga to Dole. The trek to Dole is a comparatively shorter trek and this is because we have to be conscious of the gain in altitude. Though it’s a shorter trek, we will probably be on the trail for about 5 hrs or so.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 7:
Again a relatively shorter day for altitude reasons.

Today we trek from Dole to Machermo.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 8:
Today we finally reach the Gokyo settlement. The small lakes leading up to this place and the view in every direction is truly very special.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 9:
Day hike to Gokyo Ri to get a truly special view of some of the Himalaya’s greatest.

Though not impossible, it is unlikely that all of you will ever again see so many of the Himalaya’s greatest from one spot!

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 10:
Today we re-trace our steps to Dole.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 11:
Today we trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 12:
The destination for today’s trek is Lukla.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 13:
Morning flight back to Kathmandu for Hot Showers and great massages.

Overnight: Tea lodge.

Day 14:
Transfer to Kathmandu International Airport.
